Frequently Asked Questions

Who sets the halachic guidelines?

We have a Rabbinical board and all members must follow the guidelines. These guidelines will be supervised by R’ S. Lazaroff , R’ Masri, and R’ Wender. All Halachic questions should be directed to info@houstonhatzalah.org. Please be aware that the Rabbonim have graciously given their time for Hatzalah and therefore please DO NOT directly approach the Rabbonim with any questions.

What are the training requirements for a Dispatcher?

Training will be approximately 4 hours of instructional time. We will try our best to schedule these classes as conveniently as possible.

What do I need to do during a dispatch shift? How long is each shift?

The dispatcher must be on call for the duration of their shift. This means staying within hearing distance of the phone at all times and being prepared to stop doing whatever it is you are occupied with when a call comes in and attend to the call “immediately” without delay or reluctance. This is a significant obligation and we want to make sure that you, your family, and employer, are well aware of the commitment and requirement involved.

Will I be required to complete any overnight shifts?

Yes. The overnight hours will be divided into a few shifts (time subject to change based on feedback from the dispatchers.) We would like each volunteer to commit to at least one overnight shift a month, although an inability to do this will not disqualify you from volunteering.

What materials and supplies do I need?

The dispatcher will need to have Internet access at home as well as basic computer skills. Hatzalah will provide the computer and equipment.

Do I need experience?

No prior experience in the medical field is necessary. However, a dispatcher will need to have the ability to multitask, remain calm and focused in stressful situations, be responsible and committed, and maintain confidentiality.

Why does our community need Hatzalah?

Rapid response, rapid treatment, and rapid transport are the essential components of successful Emergency Medical Services intervention. The presence of Hatzalah in our community substantially increases the likelihood that, when needed, our trained first responders will be on scene providing necessary life saving treatment quicker than was possible ever before.

Do I have to be a member of the Hatzalah in order to utilize its services?

No! Hatzalah of Houston will respond to any call for help within its primary response area.

Is there any charge for the services that Hatzalah provides?

No! There is never any charge for our services. Hatzalah of Houston is completely dependent on the generous donations of caring members of our community and those who value the chesed we do.

What does “Hatzalah” mean?

“Hatzalah” is the Hebrew word for rescue. For over 40 years Hatzalah members have been rescuing fellow Jews and others in need of emergency medical treatment.
